文章选自新概念4第五课Youth。作者观点很正，文章写得也是极好的，看完神清气爽，特别是在过年期间碰到的一些亲戚让人身心俱疲之后。

关于新概念4。这本书有所谓不适合中国人学，完全是无稽之谈。书中选文看似用词简单，其实要完全体会作者文章的妙处，水平要很高很高才行。有个教授说新概念是给非英专学的，英专要用精读课本，这完全是胡扯。新概念4的文章媲美《高级英语》，这就是最好的一群作家写的文章了，不会再有新概念5。网上免费的视频讲解新概念4，其实讲解水平不高。我直言，我自己现在的水平无法深挖新概念4文章的妙处。

我豆瓣的好友说过即便新概念2都大有学头。新概念4，他说在他词汇量两万和三万的时候看，感觉完全不一样。
    新概念这套教材可惜就在于，很少有老师认真读完课程的前言导论说明，按照亚历山大的要求教学。特别是挖掘文章的深意，这个老师的水平要很高才行。

　　People are always talking about ‘the problem of youth‘. If there is one -- which I take leave to doubt -- then it is older people who create it, not the young themselves. Let us get down to fundamentals and agree that the young are after all human beings -- people just like their elders. There is only one difference between an old man and a young one: the young man has a glorious future before him and the old one has a splendid future behind him: and maybe that is where the rub is.
　　When I was a teenager, I felt that I was just young and uncertain -- that I was a new boy in a huge school, and I would have been very pleased to be regarded as something so interesting as a problem. 　　I find young people exciting. They have an air of freedom, and they not a dreary commitment to mean ambitions or love of comfort. They are not anxious social climbers, and they have no devotion to material things. All this seems to me to link them with life, and the origins of things. It‘s as if they were, in some sense, cosmic beings in violent and lovely contrast with us suburban creatures. All that is in my mind when I meet a young person. He may be conceited, ill-mannered, presumptuous or fatuous, but I do not turn for protection to dreary cliches about respect of elders -- as if mere age were a reason for respect. I accept that we are equals, and I will argue with him, as an equal, if I think he is wrong.
